The SPL Series temperature gauge delivers reliable local temperature indication and active process protection within a single, field-proven instrument. Its clearly readable 4-1/2 in. dual-scale °F/°C dial allows operators to monitor temperature at a glance, while the two independently adjustable limit contacts enable precise alarm and shutdown setpoints to be configured without removing the gauge from service. Built around a vapor-actuated capillary sensing system with a die-cast aluminum enclosure, the SPL Series is well-suited to demanding environments including gas compressor stations, diesel engine installations, industrial heaters, and water pump systems. Two model variants — the surface-mount SPLC and the panel-mount SPLFC — along with multiple capillary lengths, material options, and enclosure configurations make it straightforward to match the right instrument to virtually any temperature monitoring requirement.

  • Integrated Temperature Indication and Limit Switching: The SPL Series combines a precision vapor-actuated temperature dial gauge with two independently adjustable pointer-type limit contacts in a single compact instrument. When the process temperature reaches either the high or low setpoint, the gauge pointer physically contacts the corresponding limit arm, completing the pilot circuit and triggering whatever control action — alarm annunciation, equipment shutdown, or process interlocking — has been wired to the output terminals. This mechanical switching approach requires no separate transmitter, controller, or external power supply to function.
  • Field-Adjustable High and Low Limit Contacts: Both the high and low temperature limit setpoints can be adjusted directly from the instrument face by turning the fingertip-type adjustment knobs, without any disassembly or special tools. Operators can change alarm or shutdown thresholds during commissioning or process modifications quickly and safely while the gauge remains in service. Both limit contacts are clearly visible on the dial face, making it straightforward to verify setpoint positions at any time.
  • Start-Up Lockout Toggle Switch (SPLC Models): On surface-mount SPLC models, an integrated toggle switch allows the low limit contact to be temporarily bypassed during equipment start-up. This prevents nuisance shutdowns in the period after initial startup when process temperature has not yet risen above the low limit setpoint. The toggle switch must be manually reset once temperature reaches normal operating range, ensuring that low-limit protection is restored after the start-up period has passed.
  • Vapor-Actuated Capillary Sensing System: The SPL Series uses a sealed capillary tube connected to a copper sensing bulb immersed directly in the process medium. Heat causes the sensing fluid to vaporize, generating pressure within the sealed system that is transmitted through the capillary to a bourdon tube mechanism in the gauge head. This all-mechanical vapor-pressure principle requires no electrical power at the sensing point, making it inherently suitable for remote sensing locations and electrically classified areas when used with appropriate enclosure options.
  • Die-Cast Aluminum Enclosure with Multiple Protection Options: The standard instrument housing is constructed from die-cast aluminum, providing a durable and corrosion-resistant enclosure for outdoor and industrial environments. For more demanding conditions, an environmentally sealed (ES) option offers enhanced ingress protection, while an oil-sealed (OS) case provides additional resistance against vibration, corrosion, and electrical arc. An explosion-proof (EX) enclosure option is available for installations in Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D hazardous areas.
  • Dual-Scale °F and °C Dial for Versatile Readout: Every SPL Series gauge is fitted with a standard 4-1/2 in. white-on-black dial displaying temperature simultaneously in both Fahrenheit and Celsius. This dual-scale configuration eliminates unit conversion errors in multinational operations and makes the gauge immediately readable by personnel working in different measurement systems. The high-contrast dial format ensures clear readability at working distances typical of compressor stations and engine rooms.
  • Choice of Capillary Lengths and Material Configurations: Standard capillary length is 5 ft. (1.5 m), with extended lengths available in 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 ft. options to accommodate installations where the gauge head must be located away from the temperature sensing point. Two material configurations are available: a standard PVC-armored copper capillary with copper sensing bulb, and a fully stainless steel armored capillary with stainless steel sensing bulb for corrosive or mechanically harsh environments.
  • Gas Compressor Temperature Monitoring and Shutdown: Elevated discharge temperatures are a leading indicator of compressor problems, including valve failures, poor inter-stage cooling, or gas compositional changes. The SPL Series, installed at the compressor discharge or inter-stage locations, provides continuous temperature readout and high-limit switching to initiate an automatic shutdown before overtemperature conditions cause internal damage to the compressor.
  • Engine Coolant Temperature Monitoring: Maintaining coolant temperature within a safe operating window is critical to preventing both engine overheating and overcooling-related damage. The SPL Series monitors coolant temperature in diesel and gas engines, with the high-limit contact triggering an alarm or shutdown when coolant temperature reaches critical levels and the low-limit contact indicating insufficient warm-up — protecting engines in unattended pumping and power generation applications.
  • Industrial Heaters and Coolers: Process heating and cooling systems require close temperature control to maintain product quality and prevent thermal damage to equipment or process materials. The SPL Series high and low limit contacts can be integrated into the heater or cooler control circuit to modulate heating elements, cooling water flow, or bypass valves, providing straightforward on/off temperature regulation without the need for a separate temperature controller.
  • Water Pump Temperature Control: Water pumps in circulating systems, cooling towers, and fire suppression services must be protected from low-temperature conditions that could indicate freeze risk, as well as high-temperature conditions that may indicate blocked flow or bearing overheating. The SPL Series provides a reliable local temperature reference alongside limit switching for both protective scenarios within a single instrument.
  • General Process Temperature Control: Across a broad range of industrial processes — including chemical production, oil and gas separation, food processing, and HVAC systems — the SPL Series delivers a dependable combination of local temperature indication and automatic alarm or shutdown switching. Its adjustable limit contacts and choice of capillary lengths make it adaptable to vessels, pipelines, heat exchangers, and storage tanks across various process industries.
  • Control Panel Integration with SPLFC Models: The SPLFC panel-mount model is specifically configured for integration into compressor control panels, engine management enclosures, and pump skid electrical cabinets. Its round panel-mount case fits standard cutouts, and wire lead terminations simplify panel wiring. The front-accessible limit adjustment knobs remain easily operable after panel installation, allowing setpoints to be modified during commissioning without opening the panel enclosure.

How the SPL Series Temperature Gauge Works

The SPL Series operates on a vapor-actuated capillary sensing principle, combining fully mechanical temperature measurement with direct pointer-type limit switching. The copper sensing bulb is immersed into the process fluid or positioned within a thermowell in the process pipe or vessel. As the process temperature rises, the sealed sensing fluid inside the bulb partially vaporizes, increasing the vapor pressure within the closed capillary system. This pressure is transmitted through the PVC-armored copper capillary tube to a bourdon tube mechanism housed inside the gauge head, where the tube deflection is converted into rotary pointer movement across the 4-1/2 in. dual-scale dial.

Within the gauge, two independently adjustable limit contact arms — one for the high setpoint and one for the low setpoint — are positioned at the desired alarm or shutdown temperature values using the fingertip adjustment knobs on the instrument face. As process temperature changes and the pointer sweeps across the dial, physical contact between the pointer and either limit arm completes the pilot-duty electrical circuit. This closing action delivers an output signal to the connected control function: an alarm annunciator, solenoid shutdown valve, engine ignition cutout, or equipment start-stop relay, depending on the application wiring.

The gold-plated silver contacts incorporate a self-cleaning wiping motion during each make-and-break switching event, maintaining reliable electrical continuity over extended service intervals. For high-pressure or corrosive process connections where direct bulb immersion is not practical, a stainless steel thermowell can be installed to isolate the sensing bulb from the process while still allowing accurate temperature measurement — and enabling bulb removal without opening the process line.

The SPL Series is a vapor-actuated mechanical temperature gauge that combines local temperature indication with adjustable high and low limit switch contacts. It is used to monitor process temperature and automatically trigger alarm, shutdown, or start-stop actions when temperature rises above or falls below operator-set thresholds. Common applications include gas compressors, engine coolant monitoring, industrial heaters and coolers, water pump systems, and general process temperature control where both local readout and automatic protective switching are required in a single instrument.

The SPLC is the surface-mount version of the SPL Series. It features an integrated toggle switch that bypasses the low limit contact during equipment start-up, preventing nuisance shutdowns while the process temperature climbs above the low limit setpoint after initial startup. The toggle must be manually reset once the process reaches normal operating temperature. The SPLFC is the panel-mount version with a round case configuration for flush installation in control panels. Both models share the same adjustable high and low pilot-duty limit contacts and the same temperature ranges.

The SPL Series is available in two temperature ranges: 15° to 250°F (9° to 121°C), which covers most engine coolant, water pump, and lower-temperature process applications, and 130° to 350°F (54° to 177°C), which is suited to gas compressor discharge temperatures, process heaters, and higher-temperature process fluids. Both ranges are shown on the standard dual-scale °F/°C dial. The appropriate range should be selected to ensure the normal operating temperature falls within the accurate middle third of the dial scale.

Two complete material configurations are available for the SPL Series. The standard option uses a PVC-armored copper capillary with a copper sensing bulb, suitable for general service applications with non-corrosive process fluids. The stainless steel option provides a stainless steel armored capillary and stainless steel sensing bulb, recommended for corrosive process environments, marine installations, or applications requiring greater mechanical durability. Capillary lengths of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 ft. are available in both material configurations.

Yes. An explosion-proof (EX) enclosure option is available for SPL Series instruments, rated for Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D hazardous locations. This option encloses the gauge mechanism within a certified explosion-proof housing, making it suitable for gas compressor stations, oil and gas production facilities, and other locations where flammable gases or vapors may be present. An environmentally sealed (ES) version is also available for demanding outdoor or chemically aggressive environments that do not require full explosion-proof certification.

A thermowell is strongly recommended for SPL Series installations in high-pressure processes or where the process fluid is corrosive, abrasive, or chemically incompatible with the sensing bulb material. The thermowell isolates the sensing bulb from direct process contact and, importantly, allows the sensing bulb to be removed, repositioned, or replaced without depressurizing or draining the process system. Compatible 304 and 316 stainless steel thermowells are available with pressure ratings of 3,000 and 4,000 psi to suit a wide range of process conditions.
